(KNSI) – Like many teams in the area, the Apollo Track and Field Team and fans were ready to witness greatness from their seniors.
Although Liban Mohamed, Haley Joos, Isaiah Weekes, Peter Olson and Erin Jansky missed out on the senior season, they all contributed to a team that is heading in the right direction.
To say Mohamed(featured photo) had a great track and cross-country career at Apollo would be vastly understating how magnificent of a runner he truly is.
The two-time cross-country state qualifier is a member of the CLC indoor 4×800-meter relay record team and a member of the 2019 4×800-meter state qualifying team that was section champion.
Mohamed is currently third all-time at Apollo in the 3200-meter run with a personal record of 9:56.01; he also was the 2019 CLC Champion in the 3200-meter run and All-Conference in the 1600.
Mohamed stated he gets a bit nervous when talking on the radio so the Saturday Sports Special crew had head coach, Justin Darrow on to talk about what Mohamed and the rest of the seniors meant to him and the program.
Joos and Jansky were not only standouts for the track-and-field team, they also starred for the volleyball team in the fall.
Joos is currently second all-time at Apollo in the shot-put with her personal record of 37-feet-11.5-inches and fifth all-time in the discus with her personal-record of 109-feet-00-inches.
Jansky is also part of the Apollo 4×800-meter team that currently holds the all-time Apollo record.
Weekes, Olson and Voight all played important parts on a team that finished second in the CLC for their best finish since 1993.
With a pole vault of 13-feet-0-inches, Weekes finished as runner-up in the CLC and placed sixth at sections.
Olson was an alternate on the 4×800-meter relay team that went to state and part of the 4×800-meter relay team that was CLC Champion in 2019; he also played soccer for the Eagles.
Voight finished his track career as All-Conference as part of the 4×100 relay team.
The area may never see talent again like it saw from the Apollo Track-And-Field stars the past few years but Leighton Broadcasting and KNSI would like to thank them for showing us what it takes to be not only great athletes but amazing people as well.
