(KNSI) - The St. Cloud VA Health Care System is looking for veterans to enter their artwork in the 2020 National Veterans Creative Arts Competition.

The St. Cloud VA is taking entries now until February 21st.

Music Therapist and local Art Show Coordinator Madge Scherer says there are a couple of requirements for vets to enter the competition.

"The only requirements for participating are you have to be enrolled for your care at the St. Cloud VA, and then the art has to have been completed in the last year."

She says almost every art medium is included in the competition.

"There are 50 different categories. It's divided into fine arts, applied arts, and kits. Each category competes within itself, and there's quite a broad range. There is painting and photography. Things like woodworking, jewelry, and beadwork."

Submissions in the visual arts division of the Veterans Art Show will be judged on February 26th by three local artists with the winners moving onto the national competition. The date and location for national competition hasn't been set.

The work will then be displayed from 12:30-6:30 p.m. on February 26th and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on February 27th in the Auditorium (Building 8 ) on the St. Cloud VA Medical Center campus. The show is open to the public.

Sherer says art projects have a positive effect on veterans being treated at the VA.

"It's a great thing to see what they've done and to hear about how the arts have been apart of their therapy and how they find it healing. You'll hear some amazing stories if you're able to come to the show."

The competition is an annual event providing veterans receiving treatment at VA facilities the opportunity to participate in creative self-expression in art, creative writing, dance, drama, and music as part of their therapy, and to gain recognition for these artistic accomplishments.

Along with the artwork, vets can also submit music, dance, drama, and writing pieces. Those entries are due March 6th.
