(KNSI) - A popular destination ski hill in Minnesota may be in trouble.
Spirit Mountain, near Duluth is asking the city council there for a $235,000 bailout.
A handful of residents urged council members to approve the cash infusion, saying Spirit Mountain is an economic asset to the area, however, skier visits were down by a third from 2014 to 2018, and season passes are also down 40 percent from ten years ago.
A large event that was to be held there canceled due to bad weather, adding insult to injury. Spirit Mountain's Executive Director told the council that without the bailout, they would have to close.
The Duluth City Council voted 8 to 1 Monday night to approve the bailout.
The money will come from tourism tax dollars that hadn't been set aside for other projects.
