ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - A woman was arrested after allegedly causing a head injury to an infant left in her care.

On June 1st, the Stearns County Sheriff's Office was called to the home of Stephanie Ann Boeckers at 28154 County Road 12 in Martin Township, north of Paynesville, for an 8-month-old boy who had stopped breathing.

The child was taken to Melrose Hospital, airlifted to St. Cloud Hospital, and then transported to Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis where doctors learned the boy suffered a brain injury and retinal hemorrhaging.

Boeckers was interviewed by police and told them the child was acting normal when he suddenly went stiff.

She denied that there had been an accident or that she had harmed the child.

Police say the 36-year-old later told them that the boy tipped over in a wagon the day before and could have been hurt that way.

Doctors say the child’s injuries were so severe that he would have shown sign of being hurt immediately.

Investigator say they reviewed re-enactment video of the child tipping over in a wagon and say the boy’s injuries were inconsistent with Boeckers story.

The boy's parents told police that there was nothing wrong with their child when they dropped him off for daycare.

Boeckers has been charged with 1st degree assault. Bail was set at $200,000. Her next court date is October 16th.
