(KNSI) - Someone is trying to scam Stearns County residents.
The sheriff's office says they've received multiple reports of a phone scam on Tuesday.
Investigators say the scammers are telling people they have pending criminal charges against them.
The scammer tells the person to call the IRS at a number they provide or be subject to arrest.
Law enforcement says these calls are not authentic and are as an attempt to steal money.
The IRS does not contact people by telephone in this manner.
The sheriff's office says if you receive a call like this, hang up and ignore the call.
Some have reported receiving more than one call. All should be considered a scam.
Deputies say it's not necessary to report these calls as they've received multiple reports of the scam.
