(KNSI) - Stearns County is celebrating the opening of the Dairyland Trail extension this week.
The public is invited to join in the Grand Opening on Friday, at 5:30 p.m. at the Greenwald Trailhead, 114 West 1st Avenue South.
A bridge was repaired and gravel added to extend the trail another three miles east from Greenwald to 315th Avenue west of New Munich.
The Celebration starts at the Greenwald Trailhead and goes east down the trail to the reconstructed bridge.
Attendees can hike, bike, ride a horse, or hop on the hay wagon.
Refreshments will be provided.
Scheduled events include:
5:30 Hayride leaves Greenwald Trailhead
5:45 Ribbon cutting ceremony on the reconstructed bridge
6:00 Hayride returns to Greenwald Trailhead for additional rides
7:00 Last hayride leaves
The Dairyland Trail first opened in the spring of 2013 and now runs a total of 10 miles, from Elrosa to New Munich.
Future plans call for the Dairyland Trail to be extended southwest to Brooten and northeast to Albany.
This would connect it to other snowmobile trails and the existing Lake Wobegon Trail and would run 26 miles.
The Dairyland Trail has an aggregate surface to allow for horseback riding, biking, hiking, and snowmobiling.
