(KNSI) - Drivers on Highway 23 will encounter some lane closures starting Tuesday.

Crews are resurfacing 23 between Benton County Road 1 and Highway 95, including turn lanes and shoulders. The work will happen from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday on good weather days.

Flaggers will be out directing access to and from the intersections.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation says the project will improve access at Benton County Road 8 by reconstructing the access at Highway 23. MnDOT is putting in a "Reduced Conflict Intersection," also known as a j-turn.

The j-turn is an alternative way to cross on intersection on a four lane highway. Drivers would turn right into the same direction of traffic, merge into the left lane, and then make a u-turn in the direction they intend to travel. MnDOT says the j-turn intersection can greatly reduce crashes at intersections where drivers must cross over a busy highway to get to another road.

Watch for workers, directional signs, and orange cones and barrels. Expect changes and slow moving equipment to enter and exit work areas. Drivers can expect delays, especially at peak travel times.

All work is expected to be complete by October 28th, 2020.
