(KNSI) - A Central Minnesota car dealership has started a GoFundMe page to help keep kids in warm winter gear.

Mathison Motors in Clearwater is in the first year of their Essential Five drive to collect donations to buy hats, gloves, boots, coats, and snow pants for school kids in need.

Jamie, with Mathison Motors, says they stumbled across the idea to help after their own experience.

"My son actually had forgotten his boots one day at school, and he came home, and he was extremely upset, and he said because he forgot his boots, he had to stand on the sidewalk and couldn't go out and play with the other kids. I found out that if a kid doesn't have the essential five, they might possibly not be able to go out for recess, or they get singled out and have to stand on the sidewalk."

She says they started calling around to area districts and realized a lot of kids need winter gear.

"It's not that all these kids don't necessarily have them, but they might have holes in them, they're used and are of poor quality. So, we thought, let us get these kids something fresh just to help them out and make sure they're warm."

She says the dealership will match up to $2,000 and will be collecting donations until the end of the year.

The winter gear is being donated to the Annandale, Maple Lake, Monticello, Becker, Big Lake, and Kimball School Districts.
