(KNSI) - Stearns County is using a new emergency notification system that provides messaging to the community on a cell phone, email and text message.
Residents who would like to receive emergency alerts need to register for the service and those who were signed up under the old messaging system will need to re-register.
People who are sign up for alerts can choose what messages they want to receive and how they want to get them.
Options include emergency alerts, general alerts, and severe weather notifications.
Landlines do not need to be registered as Stearns County already has access to those numbers.
Those wanting to receive cell phone alerts will need to register with the system.
The service covers St. Cloud and Sartell, even those portions that are in Benton or Sherburne County.
To sign up, go to the Stearns County website at StearnsCountyMN.gov or go through the Smart 911 app.
