(KNSI) - A woman who had worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for two businesses in New London is accused of stealing almost $400,000.

49 year old Melanie Daniel of Mounds View is charged with 44 felonies in Kandiyohi County court - 39 counts of theft and five counts of theft by swindle.

Court records show Daniel was employed with Lake Country Crane and Wachtler Incorporated since 2013, and accountants believe Daniel began stealing from the company right away and continued until she was caught in June of 2019.

The theft was discovered when the owner of Lake Country Crane wrote out a check to the owner of Wachtler Incorporated for $2800, but it didn't show up on the bank statement.

Staff at the bank showed the check was endorsed by Daniel and cashed, but the money was never deposited into the Wachtler account.

The next day, officials say, Daniel went to Italy for 10 days.

While she was out, Lake Country Crane worked with and accountant and the bank and discovered several questionable charges for shopping sprees, healthcare and credit card bills.

Her next hearing is April 14.

Each county of theft by swindle alone carries a maximum 10 year sentence and/or a $20,000 fine.
