(KNSI) - A new program to encourage more people to use the Lake Wobegon Trail has kicked off for the summer.
The Bicycle Benefits Business program encourages biking to a business off the trail by offering deals to people who bike and show their Bike Benefits helmet sticker.
Helmet stickers are purchased for $5 and are good at any participating stores.
Businesses planning on taking part are Nori Café-St. Cloud, Good Earth Food Co-Op-St. Cloud, House of Pizza-St. Cloud, Local Blend-St. Joseph, Minnesota Street Market-St. Joseph, Bad Habit Brewing Company-St. Joseph, Gathering Grounds-Avon, Fisher’s Club-Avon, and John Dough’s Pizza-Melrose.
Rewards and discounts vary by business but can include 2 for 1, discounts, or free items.
The first 20 businesses taking part in the program get a free start-up kit.
Participating businesses sign up for the program by purchasing a start-up kit for $26.75.
The kit includes 10 helmet stickers, a listing on the Bicycle Benefits website, and inclusion in local promotions.
Support for the program comes from the Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP), Bike St. Cloud and the Lake Wobegon Trail Association.
The Lake Wobegon Trail is 65 miles long and runs from Waite Park through St. Joseph, Albany, Holdingford, Bowlus, Freeport, Melrose, Sauk Centre, West Union and Osakis.
