(KNSI) - Site construction has begun on Waite Park's 5,000 seat amphitheater.
KNSI caught up with mayor Rick Miller at the site located on 17th Avenue South and 7th street south, as crews worked to clear the site.
Miller says he wasn't sure the project was ever going to get off the ground, since it took the city three applications to secure the $5 million in state bonding needed for the project.
"Well we gave it a good effort I guess it's just not going to go, and then all of the sudden here we are, we're standing here and trees are coming down and you can see the other side now, so it's a great feeling."
The amphitheater's total cost is expected to be $10 to $12 million.
Miller says the bonding money will be paid off in less than 10 years through excess sales tax.
The city hopes to book 15-20 national acts a year.
He says they're on track to open the amphitheater by the summer of 2020.
