(KNSI) – A 16-year-old from rural Dassel was flown to a Twin Cities hospital after investigators say a dropped shotgun went off during a duck hunt on Powers Lake.
The Meeker County Sheriff’s Office got the call at 7:05 a.m. on Monday from the 29000 block of County Road 14 in Forest City Township.
According to deputies, three 16-year-old boys were hunting from a boat and had just fired at a group of ducks when one of them dropped his shotgun. The gun discharged when it landed, and the shot hit one of the boys in the leg.
The other two hunters called 911 and cared for the victim until help arrived, including tying an improvised tourniquet on his injured leg.
Mayo Ambulance took the teen to Meeker Memorial Hospital in Litchfield. He was then flown to North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.
Sheriff’s deputies, a Meeker County community paramedic, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Litchfield Rescue and Mayo Ambulance all responded to the lake.
The sheriff’s office says the incident remains under investigation.
