The U.S.-Canada trade relationship has entered a tense phase, with new tariffs implemented by both sides in late August and early September. This latest exchange adds costs to goods flowing in both directions, creating uncertainty across one of North America’s key trade corridors.
Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, effective September 8, target C$27.6 billion worth of qualifying U.S.-origin imports, with surtax rates of 15%, 25%, or 50%, depending on the product and the corresponding U.S. tariff treatment. The measures follow the 50% U.S. tariff on $27.6 billion of Canadian goods that took effect on August 22.
