(KNSI) – Governor Tim Walz has ordered United States and Minnesota flags flown at half-staff at all state buildings on Friday, marking 25 years since the September 11th terrorist attacks.
The order runs from sunrise to sunset. Walz signed the proclamation Thursday, designating the day as Patriot Day in Minnesota.
Thousands of people were killed and injured in the 2001 attacks. In his proclamation, Walz credited police officers, firefighters, rescue crews, and everyday Americans with showing extraordinary bravery in the hours and days that followed.
Congress designated September 11th as Patriot Day in December of 2001. In 2009, lawmakers asked that the date also be observed as a National Day of Service and Remembrance.
Walz is encouraging residents, businesses, and other organizations across the state to lower their own flags and to mark the anniversary with an act of service or by thanking local first responders.
