(KNSI) – The city of St. Cloud is getting more than $119,000 from the state to replace dying trees and expand its tree canopy.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources awarded Community Tree Planting Grants to 33 communities statewide. St. Cloud’s share is $119,253.

The grants pay to remove damaged and dying trees and replace them with a wider mix of species, a hedge against losing an entire canopy to a single pest or disease. The DNR says more than 6,000 trees will be planted or replaced statewide through this round of funding. The Minnesota Legislature funds the program.

Monticello was the only other area community on the list, at $250,000. The largest awards went to Maplewood at $500,000, the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board at $400,000, and Northfield and St. Peter at $300,000 each. The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe received $289,000.
