McKnight Foundation Increases Support for Rural Minnesota

(KNSI) – More financial help is on the way for Central Minnesota. Rural communities will get a hand up thanks to the McKnight Foundation’s support of The Minnesota Initiative foundation.

Each of the six Minnesota Initiative Foundations will receive $1 million in funding in 2026, including $500,000 in additional general operating support. For the Initiative Foundation serving Central Minnesota, this funding will strengthen the organization’s ability to respond to community-identified priorities, including entrepreneurship and workforce development, small business lending, child care, nonprofit development and community vitality.

Born in the 1980s amid the farm crisis and broader economic upheaval across rural Minnesota, the Minnesota Initiative Foundations were created after McKnight leaders spent a year traveling the state, listening in church basements, school gyms, community centers and local diners. What emerged was a long-term commitment: six independent, locally governed institutions rooted in place and built to endure.

Over four decades, the Minnesota Initiative Foundations have made an extraordinary impact on their communities, in part by providing more than $439 million in grants, deploying $364 million in local business investments, and by leveraging more than $876 million in additional resources for Greater Minnesota. Today, the Minnesota Initiative Foundations represent a nationally recognized model for rural investment.
