(KNSI) — AAA projects 72.2 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home for the Independence Day holiday, setting a new record, topping last year’s mark of 71.8 million.
An estimated 61.4 million people will travel by car over July 4th week, just above last year’s 61.3 million. AAA says 85% of holiday travelers plan to drive to their destination, even with gas prices at four-year highs.
Last year’s national average for a gallon of regular gas was $3.15 on Independence Day. This year’s prices are higher at $3.85, but still below the $4.80 national average from 2022. Even so, AAA notes that driving remains cheaper than flying for many travelers, especially families with kids.
Locally, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded around St. Cloud is $3.60, up six cents from Tuesday. A year ago, drivers were paying $2.88.
Statewide, Minnesota’s average is $3.65, up three cents from Tuesday. Last year at this time, the average was $3.02.
