(KNSI) – A new horror film from a local filmmaker is set to premiere at the Cold Spring Quarry Cinema next month.
Demon, written and directed by St. Cloud State University graduate Matt Luczak, will screen at the cinema on Saturday, July 25, and Monday, July 27. The film follows a young man who becomes involved with a cult hiding a dark secret.
Luczak said he drew inspiration from the current political climate while developing the story. He further noted how men in a certain age group can be especially vulnerable to manipulation by different ideologies, which can lead them down dangerous paths.
“Growing up, I was definitely kind of anti-horror,” Luczak said. “I didn’t like to be scared, but as I went to film school, I found that you could do a lot within the genre. This is the first horror film I’ve made, so that’s kind of exciting.”
More than 80 actors auditioned for roles in Demon, most of them from the St. Cloud area. Others came from Minneapolis and as far away as Fargo, North Dakota. Most of the film was shot in St. Cloud, with one sequence filmed in Duluth.
Luczak said the movie was entirely self-financed by the production team, a move he described as risky given that few films are produced in St. Cloud. He said he hopes audience response will determine whether the investment pays off.
