(KNSI) – A life-sized version of the classic tabletop foosball game is rolling into the Scheels parking lot Friday, and organizers hope it leaves local food shelves a little fuller for summer.
Scheels and United Way of Central Minnesota are teaming up for the Kick Summer Hunger Human Foosball Tournament and Grill Fest on June 5th. The event runs from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the St. Cloud Scheels lot at 30 North Waite Avenue, and watching is free for everyone.
The main attraction is the human foosball tournament, where players line up along sliding bars inside a fenced court and kick a ball toward the opposing goal, just like the classic game, scaled up to human size. Teams of six to seven players, with five on the court at a time, are guaranteed three games each. The tournament is open to players ages 13 and older, with minors needing a parent or guardian signature, and it costs $250 per team to enter.
Beyond the court, the day includes Woodsman axe throwing, a grill fest and appearances from community mascots.
At the center of it all is a United Way food drive built around a need that can fade from view once classes let out. With school meal programs unavailable over the break, many central Minnesota families lose a reliable source of food for their kids during the summer months. Organizers are collecting non-perishable items at the Scheels tent to help fill that gap.
There is also some incentive to give. Every bag donated earns one entry into a drawing for a $250 Scheels gift card, and anyone who brings a non-perishable item gets an extra throw at the Woodsman axe booth.
Organizers say even a few canned goods can add up to meals for area children when they need it most.
