(KNSI) – The city of St. Joseph is considering adopting two studies to examine how to expand its fire hall, build a new police station and construct a new refueling station.

The city council will vote on adopting the studies at its upcoming meeting on Monday. The first study would analyze how much space the city needs to construct a new police station and how much additional space would be required to expand the current fire hall.

The city’s Police Department operates from a joint City Hall and police facility that the city says has limited operating space. Due to higher operational demands, technology requirements and community service expectations, the department has outgrown the facility’s functionality and capacity.

The fire hall expansion is being driven by rules and regulations governing decontamination areas, as well as the need for additional space to store the department’s vehicles. Plans to develop a new refueling station using existing underground tanks are also included.

A second study would take an in-depth look at the fire hall’s existing structure and what the building could support in terms of potential office space, truck bays and a future sleeping area for longer staffing periods.

The meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, June 1, at the city’s government center.
