(KNSI) – This spring, Benton County is set to begin work on multiple major road projects. Among the highlights of the 2026 road program are a bridge replacement, a new roundabout and various pavement improvement projects.
Safety improvements will be implemented at the intersection of County Highway 29 and Mayhew Lake Road this summer, including a new roundabout. Traffic will be closed at this intersection beginning in early June, with a reopening expected just before the start of the fall school year.
A temporary roadway will be open north of the intersection to allow access to the Villages at Creekside development. The total project cost is $3 million, partially funded by a $1.9 million federal Highway Safety Improvement Program grant.
The County Highway 12 bridge over Little Rock Creek and County Highway 13 bridge over the Elk River are also set to be replaced. Federal infrastructure funding of $2.3 million will cover the cost of both bridges.
Golden Spike Road will be resurfaced with a new surface and paved shoulders. A 7.5-mile segment from Sauk Rapids to Popple Creek is also set to be reclaimed and repaved. The road will remain open during construction, except for a three-day detour to replace pavement on the Elk River Bridge. Lane restrictions and flaggers will be in place at various times during construction.
For the 2027 season, the county will begin construction on a new roadway alignment at the intersection of County Highway 29 and Mayhew Lake Road, extending to Golden Spike Road. A $5 million federal appropriation will partially fund the project.
Total project costs are estimated at approximately $8 million. Funding will come from state and federal highway funds, as well as the county wheelage tax and county local option sales tax.
