According to a recent poll from the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, residents are increasingly concerned about the state’s economy. Many say taxpayers are not getting the same value for what they pay in state taxes. Others are feeling overwhelmed by costs not seen in recent years.

The poll shows 65% of Minnesotans rate the economy as “fair to poor,” while 47% say their personal finances have gotten worse since last year. Among lower-income residents, 53% say their financial situation has noticeably worsened.

Additionally, 51% say they are getting worse value for services relative to what they pay in state and local taxes compared to recent years.

The poll also finds that Minnesotans are concerned about state taxes and government confidence. Sixty-seven percent say taxes are too high, and 51% say increasing affordability should be a top priority for elected officials. By contrast, 44% say reducing taxes should be the top priority.

Chamber President and CEO Doug Loon noted the findings are something lawmakers cannot ignore. Senior Vice President Laura Bordelon said she hopes the results will prompt policymakers to foster stronger economic growth to help ease these pressures.

Despite these results, Minnesotans are expressing strong confidence in the private sector to lead future growth. Seventy-three percent say the state is a good place to work, and 63% have confidence in small businesses to act in the best interest of the state’s economy. An additional 51% say they have confidence in business leaders across the state.

“Despite our state’s economic challenges, Minnesota employers continue to offer good jobs and economic opportunity,” Loon said. “With the right policies in place, we can grow the economy, overcome our challenges and expand economic opportunity for everyone.”
