(KNSI) – A potential ordinance that would have expanded the St. Augusta mayor’s term from two to four years failed to pass at the city council meeting Monday night.

City Administrator Jennifer Nash said that had the ordinance passed, the new term length would have appeared on the next ballot and taken effect when the next elected mayor took office, in accordance with state law. Mayor Jeff Schmitz said the change would have allowed the mayor to focus more on city business rather than campaigning every other year.

The mayor’s term will remain two years, while council members will continue serving four-year terms.
