(KNSI) – More than 300 students from Riverview Intermediate School have planted the first 12 trees in the City of Sartell’s new “Fourth Grade Forest” at Pinecone Central Park.

On Friday, 4th-grade students were joined by family members, school staff, and city volunteers to plant the first 12 trees, one for each 4th-grade class.

The project grew out of an environmental unit taught by Brennen Rath, an educational technology and STEAM teacher at Riverview. Rath says the unit’s final project challenges students to develop action plans that can make a positive impact on the local environment, and this year’s class decided to hold a “Tree Drive” to raise money for the trees.

Principal Brittney Schoepoester says the students set a fundraising goal of $2,000 this fall and topped it, bringing in over $7,000 in just five days.

The park is located at 1105 Central Park Boulevard.
