(KNSI) – Deer hunters in Stearns County will be able to hunt with a rifle for the first time this season.
The Stearns County Board of Commissioners voted on Tuesday to allow the use of rifles for deer hunting in the county, opting against a shotgun-only ordinance. Up until now, only shotguns were allowed in the area. The decision aligns the county with current Minnesota Department of Natural Resources regulations, which took effect in January and permit rifle use throughout the state.
The board’s action follows significant public engagement, including extensive testimony from residents, the majority of whom favored allowing rifles for deer hunting. Supporters cited consistency with state rules, hunter preference, and the effectiveness of rifles in deer management as key reasons for support.
“This decision reflects the input we heard from the public and the Board’s consideration of state guidance and local perspectives,” said Board Chair Steve Notch. “We appreciate the time residents took to share their views.”
