(KNSI) – A Red Flag Warning is in effect across much of central Minnesota today, including Stearns, Benton, and Sherburne counties.

The National Weather Service in the Twin Cities issued the warning early this morning as dry conditions and gusty winds create dangerous fire weather. It runs from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Forecasters say south winds of 10 to 20 miles per hour are expected, with gusts up to 30 miles per hour. Relative humidity is forecast to drop to around 20%.

The combination of low humidity, warm temperatures, and strong winds means any fires that develop will spread rapidly. The Weather Service is advising against any outdoor burning during the warning period.
The warning covers a wide swath of Minnesota, including Morrison, Mille Lacs, Kanabec, Todd, Douglas, Pope, Wright, Meeker, and Kandiyohi counties, along with portions of south central and southwestern Minnesota.

Residents are urged to avoid activities that could spark a fire, including outdoor welding, the use of off-road vehicles in dry grass, and the improper disposal of cigarettes or hot ashes.
