(KNSI) – A vehicle fire sparked a grass fire in Lynden Township on Sunday afternoon after dry conditions and strong winds allowed the blaze to spread.
The Stearns County Emergency Communications Center received a report of a vehicle fire near the intersection of County Road 75 and 19th Avenue East around 3:00. The reporting party told authorities they heard a loud bang before seeing flames coming from the vehicle.
According to the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, extremely dry conditions in the area allowed the fire to quickly spread into the grass in a nearby ditch. Strong winds then pushed the fire along the ditch line, eventually carrying it across to the north side of the roadway, where it continued spreading northward. A significant area was burned as a result.
The Clearwater Fire Department responded and was able to extinguish the fire. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Clearwater Fire Department and the Wright County Sheriff’s Office.
