(KNSI) – The National Weather Service says the ingredients are coming together for a potential severe weather outbreak this afternoon.

Central Minnesota is in the slight, or two out of five, risk category today. That means scattered severe storms are possible. They are usually short-lived and/or not widespread, with the potential for isolated intense storms. For anyone traveling, almost the entire southern third of the state is in the enhanced, or three out of five, risk category. That means numerous severe storms are possible. They’re usually more persistent and/or widespread, with a few considered intense.

Forecasters say a frontal system will bring all severe weather hazards this afternoon, including winds over 60 miles per hour, hail, and tornadoes. The worst of it appears to be staying south of the St. Cloud area for now, but models suggest we’re in line for hail and damaging winds. Storms are expected to fire up around 3:00 and continue through about 11:00 p.m.

Have a way to receive watches and warnings today, especially this afternoon.
