(KNSI) – The St. Cloud Fire Department will open its doors on May 2nd to women curious about a career or volunteer role in the fire service.

The department is hosting the Region 6 edition of Women Explore Fire Day Minnesota as part of a coordinated statewide effort to diversify fire department rosters.

The event takes place at Station 2, 727 Anderson Avenue, with registration beginning at 9:00 a.m. and activities starting at 9:30 a.m. Women ages 16 and older are encouraged to attend. Friends and family are welcome.

Participants will rotate through hands-on stations led by women firefighters and personnel from departments across the region, gaining firsthand experience with auto extrication, hose handling, wildland operations, emergency medical scenarios and turnout gear.

Representatives from volunteer, paid on-call and full-time career departments will also be on hand.

The day will include a question-and-answer session and a keynote address from a representative of the State Fire Marshal’s office covering the range of career paths available in the fire service.

According to the department, women make up about 9% of firefighters nationwide.
