(KNSI) – A man is facing federal charges after allegedly filing a series of fraudulent tax returns seeking more than $500,000 in refunds he was not entitled to receive, according to federal prosecutors in Minnesota.
Philip Nelson Green was charged with filing false individual income tax returns for 2019, 2020, and 2021, with each return containing fabricated information including wage data, tax withholdings, and child and dependent care expenses. Federal prosecutors allege the Crookston man went further by filing a false amended 2021 return and a fraudulent 2022 return, each alone seeking more than $250,000 in bogus refunds.
Green made his initial court appearance Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Leo I. Brisbois in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota. He faces up to three years in prison for each false return count and up to five years for each false claims count.
The case is being investigated by IRS Criminal Investigation and prosecuted by the Justice Department’s Criminal Division Tax Section.
