(KNSI) – St. Cloud State men’s hockey head coach Brett Larson has resigned to take the head coaching position at the University of Minnesota.
SCSU made the announcement on Tuesday. In eight seasons with the Huskies, Larson compiled a 153-116-23 record, led the program to four NCAA Tournament appearances, two NCHC championships, and the program’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA National Championship game in 2021.
“It has been an absolute honor to serve as the head coach and continue building the legacy of Husky Hockey alongside countless wonderful student-athletes, coaches and staff over the past eight years,” said Larson. “I will cherish the memories and relationships built throughout my time in St. Cloud for a lifetime. Thank you to my players, staff and our fans for the support and everything they have given for the betterment of St. Cloud State Hockey.”
He was named NCHC Coach of the Year in his debut season and is the fastest coach in program history to reach 100 wins.
Larson also represented the United States on the international stage, helping Team USA win back-to-back gold medals at the 2024 and 2025 IIHF World Junior Championships.
He replaces another former Huskies coach, Bob Motzko, who left for the U of M and was recently let go by the Gophers.
A national search for SCSU’s next head coach is now underway.
