(KNSI)  — St. Cloud State University’s women’s hockey program had its best Olympic showing ever at the Milano Cortina Winter Games, and a current Husky is coming home with a bronze medal.

Laura Zimmermann of Switzerland beat Sweden two-to-one in overtime Thursday to claim the bronze, becoming just the second active Husky in program history to win an Olympic medal. The redshirt junior forward skated in all seven of Switzerland’s games and scored her first-ever Olympic goal in the opening round.

It was part of a record-setting Olympics for the SCSU program. Eight Huskies, four current players and four alumnae, represented five countries in Milan, doubling the program’s previous record.

Former Husky Laura Kluge had a standout debut for Germany, leading her team with three goals, four assists and seven points in five games. That point total sets a new program record for any Husky at a single Olympics. Kluge wore a Huskies sweater from 2017 to 2021 and now plays for the Professional Women’s Hockey League’s Boston Fleet. Current Husky Svenja Voigt also skated for Germany.

Four Huskies suited up for Finland. Alumna Sanni Ahola made her Olympic debut in goal, starting four games for the Finns. Alumna Jenniina Nylund skated in all five games and recorded her first-ever Olympic assists. Current sophomores Emilia Kyrkkö and Siiri Yrjölä also represented Finland.

Rounding out the contingent, former Husky Klára Hymlárová skated all five games for Czechia and recorded her first-ever Olympic assist.
