(KNSI) – The St. Cloud State University Cyber Competition Club has proven once again when it comes to defending digital networks, they’re the best in the state.

The Huskies successfully defended their Minnesota State Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition championship late last month, fending off challenges from rival colleges in an intense eight-hour cybersecurity battle.

The event tests students’ ability to protect and manage real-world business networks while under constant attack from professional hackers. Throughout the day, SCSU’s team had to juggle defending their network infrastructure while completing 30 strictly timed business tasks, all without losing their composure.

What makes this victory even more impressive? Six of the eight team members were competition rookies. “Team members attributed the victory to the close bonds they formed during the run-up to the competition, as well as the excellent communication they maintained with one another throughout,” said Dr. Mark Petzold, chair of the Department of Computing, Informatics and Data Science.

With back-to-back state championships, the team now has its sights set on the Midwest Regional on March 20st and 21nd. There, they’ll face off against state winners from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin.

The CCDC isn’t just another campus competition; it’s the largest college-level cyber defense competition in the United States, drawing more than 1,500 competitors from over 170 colleges nationwide.
