(KNSI) – It’s not the Winter Olympics, but this seasonal event will help Special Olympics Minnesota athletes compete on the big stage this summer.

The annual Stearns County Polar Plunge returns to Avon this month, with organizers expecting a couple hundred brave souls to take the icy dip into Middle Spunk Lake at Avon Beach, located next to Fisher’s Club. The jumps begin Saturday, February 21st at noon, with teams and individuals allowed to register right up until the event.

The event has raised $25,000 so far toward its $85,000 goal, with 213 plungers registered as of this week. Sheriff Steve Soyka sat down with KNSI News and explained the event helps pay the way for local athletes’ dreams. “It’s a good cause, and it’s a fundraiser for the Special Olympics. And obviously the Special Olympics take place in the summer months down in the Twin Cities. This money helps raise funds to get athletes from our local area, honestly, to be able to compete down there.”

The sheriff’s office involvement with the event is steeped in tradition and has grown significantly over the years, moving from Pleasant Lake to its current location in Avon, where local fire and police departments help with setup.

Soyka says volunteers from Rockville and Avon fire departments come together the day before the plunge to help get the beach ready. “Cutting the holes almost become like a ritual for all of us workers. It’s kind of monumental, if you would.”

He encourages community members to attend even if they’re not jumping themselves. “You don’t have to jump. If you want to come out, just be a spectator. The jumpers need a lot of encouragement. Trust me, I know because I did it. And to jump in that water can take some good cheering from people.”

Past events have featured jumpers in creative costumes, from superheroes to bananas and minions, with corporate teams that bring 25 to 30 participants.

For those who can’t make it to Avon, they can donate online to specific teams or individuals, even without attending the event. Local Avon businesses are also offering specials throughout the day.
