For as much as professional leagues and worldwide athletic agencies like to prop up the sanctity and purity of their respective games, sports are magnets for controversy. In January 2024, for example, Gary Sheffield and Alex Rodriguez lacked the votes from baseball’s elite to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, reigniting the conversation about performance-enhancing drug use in the sport. And while sports gambling is becoming more ingrained in our daily game-watching experience, heated debates and serious consequences rage on, like Toronto Raptors’ Jontay Porter receiving a lifetime ban from the NBA for violating the league’s sports betting rules in April 2024.
Some of the biggest names in American sports history have been embroiled in controversy, as have powerful players behind the scenes, leading to lifetime bans. Searching through a variety of sports, taking into account athletes, coaches, owners, and even umpires, Stacker compiled a list of 30 famous athletic figures who were banned from their sports. Sometimes, bans have been overturned and other punishments came down with little evidence, but more often than not the affected parties were unable to rebound from their sentences.
