(KNSI)- A Richmond man narrowly escaped after his pickup truck broke through thin ice on Horseshoe Lake in Munson Township.

Joshua Blommer was driving his 2006 Chevrolet Silverado on the frozen lake near Eastway Court around 5:10 p.m. Thursday when the front end of his truck suddenly broke through the ice and immediately sank. Blommer was about 50 to 75 feet from shore at the time of the incident.

The 30-year-old was able to quickly get out of the sinking vehicle and escape without injury.

When Stearns County Sheriff’s deputies arrived, they found the front half of the Silverado submerged in the lake. An investigation revealed the ice thickness where the truck went through measured only about five inches, while the rest of the lake had approximately 19 inches of ice.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources assisted the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office at the scene.

Authorities are using the incident as a reminder that ice conditions can be highly unpredictable, with thickness varying significantly over short distances. The Sheriff’s Office urges anyone venturing onto frozen lakes to exercise extreme caution and remain aware that ice safety is never guaranteed.
