(KNSI) – A project that turned a once-vacant lot in downtown St. Joseph into a culinary corner has been honored for collaborations that are breathing new life into the community.
The House Food and Tap was named the Greater Minnesota Project of the Year at the Economic Development Association of Minnesota’s Excellence in Economic Development Awards banquet held last week. The award recognizes developments that demonstrate positive impact through collaboration, creativity, and complexity while retaining employment and capital investment.
Opened in March 2024 by BriAnne and Craig Hern, The House Food and Tap required navigating significant regulatory complexities and forming creative partnerships, including a unique parking arrangement with the Sisters of St. Benedict.
The project had an unorthodox start to development. Rather than beginning with traditional blueprints, the business started with two simple questions posed to residents: “What do you love about St. Joe?” and “What addition to this corner would make St. Joe even better?”
The community’s answers shaped what became a food hall featuring four locally owned kitchens and a tap wall offering more than 30 beverage options. The space was intentionally designed to serve multiple purposes: as a gathering place for families, a launchpad for food entrepreneurs, and a venue where friendships grow and culture is celebrated.
Beyond its culinary offerings, it serves as a launch pad for food entrepreneurs. The facility acts as an incubator that supports emerging restaurant owners and stimulates local economic growth.
The Economic Development Association of Minnesota is a statewide association of public, private, and nonprofit professionals who specialize in economic development strategies and best practices across Minnesota.
Operating in the building today are 98 Hawaiian Grill, Brick Oven Pizza, Joetown Burgers, and an Eminent Coffee Café.
