(KNSI) — As our cold weather drives up demand for natural gas, Xcel Energy is alerting customers to expect a short-term spike in their bills due to rising wholesale prices.
The utility says it passes along the wholesale cost of natural gas to customers without marking it up for profit. While Xcel claims it has taken steps to soften the impact, the company is encouraging customers to consider conserving energy over the next few days.
In a press release, Xcel explains it works to minimize price impacts by purchasing and storing winter natural gas needs in advance when prices are lower. During extreme cold, the company uses peaking plants to reduce its purchases from the market. For electric service, Xcel uses diverse power sources to help minimize the effects of natural gas prices.
Customers facing billing challenges can arrange payment plans or learn about assistance programs by clicking here, or by calling 1-800-895-4999. An Averaged Monthly Payment program is also available.
As a safety reminder, if customers detect a sulfur or rotten egg smell inside or near their home, they should leave immediately without turning electrical devices on or off, using a garage door opener, or using any phone. Once outside, call Xcel Energy at 1-800-895-2999. In a life-threatening emergency, call 911.
