(KNSI) – St. Cloud State University will welcome a leading expert on genocide studies to examine what the darkest chapters of the 20th century can teach today’s military and law enforcement professionals.

David Frey, professor of history at the United States Military Academy at West Point and founder of the Resnick Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, will present a free public lecture titled “What You Do Matters: Lessons from Holocaust Perpetrators & Peacekeepers in Rwanda.”

Drawing from his research and books on the leadership and ethics of Nazi soldiers and Rwanda peacekeepers, Frey will address what he calls a critical question: Why is it important for those entrusted to use deadly force to study the Holocaust and other genocides?

Frey’s presentation will explore decisions made by German officers serving in occupied Soviet lands in 1941, as well as choices made by Major General Roméo Dallaire, Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide by the Hutus against the Tutsi.

Frey’s academic expertise has garnered him recognition, as he has been called to testify before the Senate and has advised government agencies on mass atrocities, human rights, and related issues.

The event, which has been in planning for the past year and a half, will be held twice, once in St. Paul and once in St. Cloud. It is hosted by SCSU’s Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education in collaboration with the University of St. Thomas and the Jewish Community Relations Council.

February 11th’s lecture is free and open to the public. It will take place on the Atwood Theatre stage from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The presentation follows a January 7th deadly shooting by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis that left a 37-year-old woman dead. Federal officials say Renee Good had been interfering with an investigation and struck an agent with her vehicle just moments prior to the shooting.
