(KNSI) — The St. Cloud Area Chamber of Commerce is echoing remarks from Mayor Jake Anderson earlier this week, asking for better communication between federal agents and local police.
The statement from Chamber leadership was posted on Wednesday afternoon on Facebook. In it, they “recognize that federal agencies have an obligation to carry out their responsibilities” and acknowledge “as citizens, we have a responsibility to act in a lawful and peaceful manner.” But the statement still questions the potentially heavy-handed way in which immigration sweeps are being conducted.
It warns that businesses are being hurt in two ways. Fewer workers are clocking in due to uncertainty and fear in the general community, and overall economic activity is affected, meaning lower sales.
The statement ends with a plea for “open dialogue among federal, state, local leaders, law enforcement, business representatives, and others.” The leaders believe the way forward for the community is through “clearer communication and collaboration.”
