(KNSI) – The student council at Sartell High School is being recognized for its leadership development and projects that serve the school and the larger community.

National Student Council is awarding the Sartell Student Council with a National Gold Council of Excellence Award. Nara Lee, director of student leadership for the National Association of Secondary School Principals, says that award reflects the highest dedication from a school to foster a well-developed student council program.

Summbla Anjum, treasurer of the student council, says the team worked hard to make the school year amazing despite the changes between online, hybrid and in-person learning models due to the pandemic.

“This award provides a sense of recognition, as well as motivation for the future,” Anjum said.

SHS student council advisor Karrie Fredrickson said the students involved with the council worked hard despite challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“They focused this year on engaging our students to feel connected and our staff to know we appreciate them,” Fredrickson said. “They have been creative in finding new ways to give and serve our community and grow in their leadership skills. This is a great honor and we are so proud to have earned this national recognition and the Gold level.”

Some of those activities were new and virtual: Quarantine Quest and Snowball Search.

“These were our two virtual week-long activities that involved riddles, puzzles and more,” said SHS student council president Courtney Snoberger. “We sent clues each day that required clever thinking and creativity and the participant would unlock the clues that would be entered via a Google form at the end of the week.”

The student council also continued its Thanksgiving in a Bag event.

“Each year we collect food donations in our advisory classes, which we donate to families in need throughout the community. I feel that it is a great way to come together as a school and better the community,” Anjum said.
