(KNSI) – Quick action by a Sartell officer saved two dogs from a house fire on Thursday.

According to the Sartell Police Department, around 11:00 a.m., a passerby reported seeing smoke coming from the roofline of a home on 27th Street in the northern part of town. Officer Rob Lyon was first on scene. He learned no one was home; however, two dogs were inside. Lyon broke into the home and got the four-legged friends out.

Firefighters arrived moments later and quickly contained the flames to the second floor. The structure sustained significant damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office, but the department believes the fire started on the second floor, where renovations were taking place.

Police Chief Brandon Silgjord stated, “Although we are grateful that no injuries occurred, our hearts go out to the affected family for their loss, especially right before the holiday season. We are proud of the neighboring community members who have already begun to rally around them and bring support.”

The Sauk Rapids and St. Cloud Fire Departments assisted at the scene.
