(KNSI) — The Granite City Lumberjacks take the ice on Friday night for their third annual Hockey for a Cause event, partnering with the nonprofit Smiles for Jake to raise funds for suicide prevention efforts.

Executive Director Sarah Smith explained that the night combines hockey action with an important message. “We have commemorative jerseys every year that the players wear, and then you can bid on them. And we talk about our mission and have a great night of spreading smiles and laughter and raising some funds.”

In addition to the jersey auction, the evening includes a silent auction featuring gift baskets and sports memorabilia, a 50-50 raffle, and sales of commemorative sweatshirts and hats. The organization’s mascot, Cricket, will drop the ceremonial first puck.

Smiles for Jake was founded in memory of Jake Haapajoki, a 16-year-old Brainerd boy who died by suicide on February 21st, 2018. Smith said Jake was known for his infectious smile and outgoing nature, but he struggled internally with mental health challenges that his family and friends didn’t fully recognize. His death inspired those close to him to take action. “We need to have a dedicated effort to challenge and change the stigma around suicide and really just build a culture of compassion and connection and hope,” Smith said.

All proceeds from Friday night’s fundraising activities will support Smiles for Jake’s education platform and mental health resources, including 24/7 online support on the organization’s website. The event raises around $10,000 for the nonprofit.

The game begins at 7:30 p.m. at Sports Arena East in Sauk Rapids. Tickets are $10.00 for adults and $7.00 for seniors and students, with free admission for active military members and children under six.
