(KNSI) – With a deep freeze set to grip central Minnesota, Xcel Energy is urging customers to prepare for extreme cold conditions expected to last through Monday.

According to the company, winter heating usually accounts for about half of a customer’s monthly energy bill. Xcel Energy recommends several strategies to help residents save money during the cold weather.
Lowering the thermostat by just one degree can reduce energy bills by up to 3%. Programmable or smart thermostats can automate temperature adjustments based on daily schedules.

Other energy-saving tips include opening window coverings during daylight hours to capture solar heat, then closing them at night to retain warmth. Running ceiling fans clockwise pushes warm air down from the ceiling, while ensuring all doors and windows are properly sealed prevents heat loss.

Regular maintenance also helps. Changing furnace filters monthly during winter can cut heating costs by 5% to 15%. Improving insulation in walls, crawl spaces, and heating ducts may save up to 10% on monthly energy bills.

Natural gas meters should be kept clear of snow and ice, and snow and ice should be removed gently by hand to prevent dangerous pressure buildup in gas lines.

Space heaters require careful use. Residents should only use heaters listed by recognized testing laboratories, inspect them for damage, and never leave them unattended or running while sleeping.

Carbon monoxide detectors are essential, as the gas is odorless and toxic. Anyone experiencing symptoms like headaches, nausea or lethargy should move outside immediately and call for medical help.

Downed or sagging power lines should always be considered dangerous. Residents should stay away and report them by calling 1-800-895-1999.
Xcel Energy also recommends preparing an emergency kit with flashlights, batteries, a battery-powered radio, bottled water, non-perishable food and other essentials in case of a power outage.
