(KNSI) — The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources EagleCam is back for another season, thrilling department naturalists and viewers alike.

DNR Nongame wildlife program communication specialist Elizabeth Nultmauer tells KNSI the agency is “very lucky” to have a dedicated following on the cam, and they’re grateful for the enthusiasm surrounding its return. “One of my favorite parts about my job is people talking to me about how much they love wildlife and sharing their wildlife stories, and what started as a very humble and small EagleCam back in 2012 has really grown into something pretty incredible. I think all of us on the EagleCam team are very delighted that so many people care about these eagles just like we do, and that so many people are excited to watch their behavior and learn more about them.”

The stream shows a breeding pair of bald eagles at their nest, featuring the same active nest as last season. This season, viewers will get a clearer view because the camera has been moved and an antenna has been added for a sharper image. Since 2013, the Nongame Wildlife Program has operated the camera to help people connect with nature and watch breeding birds.

People watching the pair this month will see them courting and upgrading their nest. They bring in new nesting material and large sticks each year as a bonding activity. The pair usually increases their activity at the nest as winter goes on and typically has two or three eggs by mid-February. The adults incubate the eggs for about 35 days, with both adults taking part in incubating and caring for the chicks. Once the chicks hatch, the camera shows how bald eagles raise their young.

Nultmauer says this is the pair’s second season at the new location. The first nest, which had been there for years, fell during a storm in April 2023. “We’ve seen the same pair visiting the nest they used last year, and they’ve been pretty active. So we’re very encouraged by that, and we’re really hopeful that by mid-February, we might have some eggs in that nest.”

The EagleCam pair successfully raised two eaglets last season.
