(KNSI) – Necessity can be the mother of invention, or for a retailer, the mother of expansion.

O’Brien’s Dry Goods opened only seven months ago, but it was an immediate success. In some ways, it was too successful. Owner Chad O’Brien explains what brought about Metz & Co. Antiques & Vintage so soon.

“So, we opened O’Brien’s dry goods in April, and we filled up really quickly. We needed more square footage pretty quickly. And so the opportunity to open the second location came up about three months ago…and they are complementary stores, is what I would say…The goal is to have similar vibes.”

O’Brien says he had a wait list of vendors seeking a 10′ x 10′ space to sell glassware, vintage clothing, vinyl records, old-time toys, and more. That gave him a head start in laying out the holiday launch of Metz & Company, located only two stores down at the corner of West St. Germain and 7th Avenue North.

Metz is the larger of the two spaces. In early 2026, it will expand even further. O’Brien says, “Sometime in January, we’re going to have – opening up the second floor for vendors, and so the goal would be to have more than double the vendors we have now.”

Both stores are a great option for shoppers in downtown St. Cloud on the busiest retail weekend of the year. O’Brien’s and Metz will play a central role in what is sure to be a vibrant scene on Small Business Saturday.
