(KNSI) — An English and creative writing associate professor at St. Cloud State University has won a prestigious literary honor for one of her poems.
Sarah Green has earned a Pushcart Prize for her poem “Tinder.”
The Pushcart Prize series has been around since 1976. Every year, they receive more than 10,000 nominations from small presses across the country. Last year’s nominees even included SCSU alumna Brianna Condon. Only about 70 pieces actually make it into the published book each year, so the odds of getting in are pretty slim.
Green knows how rare this kind of recognition is. As she puts it, most writers never receive this honor even once in their entire careers. This is the second time she has won. She was included in the 2008 edition for a poem called “Chances Are, Lafayette, Indiana.”
When she won the first time, an editor told her she was the youngest person to receive it up to that point. She says she never thought she’d win a second time and feels really grateful that this year’s three poetry editors chose her work.
Her winning poem, “Tinder,” originally appeared in Pleiades Magazine before getting nominated for the prize. It will appear in the anthology’s 50th edition, which comes out on December 2nd.
On top of the Pushcart win, Green also published her second poetry collection earlier this year.
