(KNSI) – The Minnesota deer hunting season is drawing near, and wildlife officials say hunters can expect excellent conditions across central Minnesota.

Wildlife Manager for the Department of Natural Resources’ Central Region, Gretchen Miller, reports that deer populations remain very productive throughout the area extending from Little Falls to the Iowa border, including the metro region. “Fawn production this year was robust. There’s no surprise to see multiple twins or even triplets in our does this year. We are in one of the most productive areas of the state.”

The strong population is attributed to favorable conditions this year, including average to above-average acorn production and abundant crops. As harvest progresses and crops are removed from fields, deer are expected to move into wooded and brush areas where hunters will have better opportunities.

The 2024 season has already seen significant success. Miller noted that over 18,000 deer have been harvested statewide through the archery season, early antlerless season, and youth hunt combined.

Wildlife managers are encouraging hunters to focus on harvesting antlerless deer to help manage population levels. “The populations of deer are really remaining stable. We’re not doing a great job at reducing the population, so the more that we can harvest those antlerless deer, we’re going to start to see a reduction in deer in our neck of the woods,” said Miller.

Hunters should be aware of chronic wasting disease (CWD) requirements, including mandatory sampling during opening weekend in 11 CWD management zones and three surveillance zones in the central region. Carcass movement restrictions also apply in certain areas.

The firearms season starts on November 8th.
