(KNSI) – Homecoming at just about any college or university in America is anchored by a sporting event. At St. Cloud State University, it is men’s hockey.
The Huskies will skate against the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves on Friday and Saturday nights. Play-by-play announcer Jim Erickson tells KNSI Radio that there is plenty planned to make it special. “They’ve got promotions this weekend where they’re giving away, not like homer hankies, but rally-type towels. So, they’ve got the fan towels. They’re giving out, like I said before, there will just be that general homecoming atmosphere, the excitement.”
Thursday and Friday, 10 pairs of tickets are being given away downtown through a scavenger hunt. Look for the paw print decal in store windows and find the stuffed animal inside to win. A concert is planned for Saturday afternoon, and fireworks will light up the night after the game is done.
Huskies enter Homecoming playing well. SCSU has won three of their last four, and probably deserved another sweep against Vermont. Erickson notes the Huskies controlled both games against the Catamounts, doubling them up in shots each night. “Most of the time you play that well in both games, you’re going to get two wins. Unfortunately for the Huskies, it was an overtime loss and a victory.”
Alaska Anchorage is typically towards the bottom of the national rankings. The program shut down for several seasons but has managed to scrape by recently as an independent. Their trip to St. Cloud is one of five consecutive weekends on the road for the Seawolves.
